In early 2014, the Hawaii Department of the Attorney General Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center released the mobile app Hawaii Sex Offender Search for Android and Apple mobile operating systems in partnership with the Hawaii Office of Information Management and Technology and the Hawaii Information Consortium.
Hawaii Sex Offender Search allows Hawaii citizens, visitors, and general public another means to inform themselves regarding specific or general sex offenders and other covered offenders in Hawaii. Although individuals listed in the directory have committed criminal offenses, the application information is established on the individual’s criminal conviction and is not based on an estimate of the offender’s level of dangerousness.
Earlier this year, the Hawaii Department of the Attorney General released a major enhancement to the Hawaii Sex Offender search that allows users to sign up for alerts regarding offenders in a specific area. Alerts are generated based on zip code or street name and city. These alerts indicate that an offender has relocated to the area or an existing offender in the area has updated their registration information.
Since the offender notifications feature went live, over 20,000 people have downloaded the app and the application has seen a 245% increase in average monthly use.
