Penske Truck Rental introduced a mobile website in summer 2011 that enabled consumers to make moving truck rental reservations from virtually any smartphone. It was the first major U.S. transportation company to do so.
Penske Truck Rental is a division of Penske Truck Leasing. It provides do-it-yourself movers with clean, well-maintained and reliable trucks as well as moving equipment and accessories.
Our usability studies indicate that the mobile version has greatly reduced the amount of time needed to reserve a moving truck.
There were several mobile-friendly changes that were launched.
The fast-loading site features large, easy-to-use touch screen interface with minimal text, designed to make for an easier experience. The functionality was based on the desktop version of PenskeTruckRental.com.
We adjusted the screen design to work with a smaller screen size. We took advantage of the built-in phone functionality, such as GPS coordinates. Throughout the mobile site, we also provided immediate call-center assistance to answer any questions that might arise during the rental process; we provide online chat help on the desktop site.
By introducing the mobile site, Penske enjoyed a 200 percent increase in Smartphone sales for local and one-way moves across the U.S.
