Alex & Tom, Inc. (A&T) recently completed the development of a newly redesigned and responsive website for the National Aquarium in Baltimore (www.aqua.org), a non-profit organization which is home to over 20,000 aquatic animals and birds.
The Aquarium team required a site that would be easy to maintain. A&T built the site using the Craft CMS. It provided the Aquarium with an easy-to-manage set of admin tools and a flexible and powerful collection of modular, reusable, and updateable template components. Once the data structure and components of the site were designed and built-out, non-developers, such as content editors, were able to create pages and custom templates easily and efficiently on their own.
Multiple components (or blocks) such as “Animals” and “Events” were developed; these blocks could be updated via an admin tool. Updating content once would then propagate to multiple areas of the website. This provided efficiencies to the Aquarium team, making it easy to add new pages and make timely content edits. A&T also provided a custom data integration with Aquarium’s ticketing system’s database, making it easy for “ticket availability” and “event info” to populate the website in real time. The technology and functionality, coupled with the responsive nature of the site, provided visitors with an intuitive user experience via mobile, tablet and desktop devices.
