In 2017, former Governor Andrew Cuomo launched the Empire State Trail to promote outdoor recreation, encourage healthy lifestyles, support community vitality, and bolster tourism-related economic development. The 750-mile Empire State Trail showcases New York’s special places, diverse history, and iconic landscapes. The Trail welcomes bicyclists and walkers of all ages and abilities to experience the Empire State’s urban centers, village main streets, rural communities, and diverse history, from New York City through the Hudson River Valley, west to Buffalo along the Erie Canal, and north to the Champlain Valley and Adirondacks. The Empire State Trail connects New York’s extraordinary experiences, people, and places.
Orion worked with the NYState Parks department to build a highly engaging and interactive website that creates an online presence for the Empire State Trail. The site showcases the trail’s information through an interactive map created using ARC GIS and detailed textual information regarding each sub-trail. The user can easily navigate between detailed information of the connected sub trails, view images, weather and trail elevation information. Cyclists can plan biking trips and download printable, step-by-step cycling directions to plan round-trip biking experiences. The site adheres to the NYState branding and accessibility guidelines and is highly visual through photographs and illustrated images.
