In September 2013, Kae Devantes, a female account executive of an advertising agency, was abducted inside her vehicle, right in front of her home. A few days later, she was found brutally murdered and her car set on fire. She was helpless against the perpetrators.
Given the worsening condition of both private and public transportation in the country, the Philippines’ largest media network ABS-CBN, saw the opportunity to create a tool that would minimize the dangers and risks and safeguard the lives of 14 million Filipinos commuters. The premise, a simple and vital call for help in case of an emergency.
ABS-CBN developed a mobile application that focuses on the basic needs and common concerns of the Filipino commuter. These outstanding concerns were security and safety.
For security, the app lets the commuter document important trip details. These data includes vital information such as mode of transportation, plate number, and photos of the driver or vehicle. It then let users nominate trusted contacts who will receive notifications about their current state and exact location if they are caught in an emergency. PasaHero also allows them to inform their social networks that they are about to begin a trip or have ended one.
For safety and emergencies, we created the Panic Button. Once activated, PasaHero broadcasts an SOS via SMS to the user’s selected contacts. The app then transitions into Panic Mode, where the device begins to record video and audio, and becomes a black box like an airplane emergency transponder.
