GOL!, an augmented reality trick shot game, was created in partnership with McDonald’s and DDB to celebrate the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. GOL! featured Qualcomm Vuforia's Smart Terrain technology, which allowed real time 3D mapping of objects, and was available in 119 countries on 1.5 billion special edition McDonald’s World Cup french fry boxes. The team set out to create an engaging app for millennials that brought the thrill of the World Cup right to your table while uniting futbol fans from around the world.
GOL! was unique in that it physically activated off of a purchased item. The game itself was a marketing tool, since to engage with it you needed to purchase fries. Additionally, users got to represent and play for the country of their choice as we wanted the user to show their country pride. Finally, the non-AR game allowed users without a fry box to enjoy the game, and entice them to visit a McDonald's to experience to full AR game.
